core drivers

3

1 - Bridging the gap between cycling infrastructure and cycling culture

2 - Providing a focal point for local activity and connecting existing community assets

3 - Creating a space for the exchange of skills, knowledge and information for the community

By outlining a design strategy for this project, I’ve determined the desired impact on the local community. Creating a 3 point plan for the project and beginning to think about how this would fit into the plan. The overall aim is to empower the people of Stretford and the wider community. Each of these drivers was based, in some way or another, on experiences during the trip to the Netherlands.

From various conversations with locals and cyclists at the Trafford Cycling forum, there is an awareness that the cyclist is often perceived as a exclusive label. One that is characterised by the cyclist with an expensive bike and as many gadgets and accessories than you can count. This one aspect of the issues facing cycling and the general public that must be addressed in order to implement a meaningful and lasting change.

Providing a platform for the successful and fluid exchange of information, skills and knowledge is something that would help the tip towards positive growth. As skills gained would help empower individuals and mobilise communities as a whole in Stretford.

As a community, Stretford rich in local assets. These are buildings, monuments and public spaces that bring value to the community and act as points of interaction for the local community. The issue currently stems from a lack of a distinct focal point, where all of these assets could be connected in order to help members of the community keep up with the local events but a place where facilities where the community would not be limited by the facilities they are taking place in.
